Letter to prospective authors

I formed Roberts and Company with six scholars—Dr. John Abelson at Caltech, Dr. Joseph Goodman at Stanford, Dr. Aaron Hirsh, Dr. David Hirsh at Columbia, Dr. Leroy Hood at the Institute for Systems Biology, and Dr. Irving Weissman at Stanford. When we formed the company, we had a particular publishing philosophy in mind, an approach that is most often practiced in small companies.

Here's how we operate:

• We surround our authors with highly skilled and creative editors, artists, designers, and production teams—and then we put our authors in the center of this creative team.
• We sign and develop fewer books than most commercial and university presses and we put all of our editorial and marketing resources behind these titles.
• We embrace the inherent risks in publishing new ideas; put more plainly, we give our authors the creative freedom to write books that can make unique and lasting contributions to education.
